Technology - Gadgets & Hardware

flipultrahd.jpgSAF's slow, but sure propagation into the realm of social media continues as we've added a YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/SAFVision to our growing number of outposts. Our first official attempt at capturing video was at the recent SAF 125th Annual Convention at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, AZ. And I would say the results are great.

I first started to explore starting a YouTube channel earlier this summer after SAF's Technology Committee suggested at the Spring Meeting we try to capture video vignettes at all futures events. So my first action was to canvass the gadgetland for light, cheap video handhelds. You can check out my exploration here. We eventually decided on the Flip, mostly for its reputed video quality and it did not disappoint. I then checked out how to get the association on YouTube and documented the process in this Floral Management Plugged In column.

Because the Flip was light, durable and had great software to download and edit video, we were able to produce a few fantastic video caps on site at the Convention - in fact, we turned around one video in a day or so to show off at SAF's Business Session on Saturday, the last day of convention. All videos were shot and uploaded to YouTube as HD (720p).

The following video, "How Would You Describe SAF?" The Flip footage was downloaded in the Flip software and then exported to be edited using iMovie.

In the video, "Why You Need to Play in the SAFPAC Tournament," the video was downloaded and edited using nothing but the Flip software.

As you may suspect, we're itching to load our shiny new YouTube channel with new content and figure out all the logistics. This time around, SAF Marketing VP Jenni Sparks, Communications VP Kate Penn and myself captured the video for How Would You Describe SAF, with Kate and Jenni doing all the editing in iMovie. The other two videos currently on SAFVision were captured with the much appreciated help from SAF's Technology Committee which included: Bob Aykens, Ken Young, Scott Kitayama and Chad Kremp. I did the quick edit in the Flip Software. We will build from the successful first attempt and ask our members to get more involved as I got positive feedback from the Committee that it was a fun and worthwhile activity.

You can check out SAF's latest video at our channel, www.YouTube.com/SAFVision or by visiting this blog and checking out the YouTube section which will be on the right side.

Cool, I've been wanting to get a Flip Mino lately and it looks like it really does take good videos.

This is important to do as conference footage can be tough to come by.

Great blog, just looking around some blogs, seems a pretty nice platform you are using. I'm currently using Wordpress for a few of my sites but looking to change one of them over to a platform similar to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would recommend about it?
