My Office Fish Tank: Platties swimming in a forest of Java fern PDF Print E-mail

Information technology is arguably a stressful profession. So how do I cope? With fish! Fish and fridays seem like a natural fit I guess if you're Catholic (which I am) so here's a totally non-technology or association related post about my office fish tank.

It's a 15 gallon "tall" fresh water fish tank housing nothing but platties and a couple of clown loaches. Platties are just great fish in general and I chose them for two reasons.

First reason is they are the cheapest fish you can buy at the pet store but provide you lots of color. I recall $1.50 to $1.99 per fish is the going rate. Plus they breed like crazy! The fish in the photos are all less than three months old.

The second, more interesting reason, is I breed them for mosquito control for our home in the deep, mosquite-infested woods in Fairfax, VA. The thing with platties is that they love to eat mosquito larvae. This will be detailed in another post I'm sure but I drop them in large glass, water filled vases on my front porch and backyard deck and they do an effective job keeping mosquitos populations low. You may have heard of "mosquito fishes" your Virginia county may provide you if you have a backyard pond. These are in fact a breed a platty but with little or no color.

Over the years, people have asked how I successfuly breed platties. Well I've given away one of the tricks -- don't have any other fish around that would eat the youngsters! And two, you need a ton of plants to provide a safe haven for the fry. The plants you see in the photos are mostly Java fern. They're growing like crazy due to the substrate being clay/stone which naturally seeps iron (fe) into the water. And if you're unfamiliar, plants love iron.

Hope you like the photos and get an idea how I relax during a tense day. I just sit down and watch the fish.

Aw, it was a top quality content. Actually I would like to write like this as well - taking time and real energy to bring about an excellent post... however what can I say... I procrastinate an awful lot and by no means appear to get things completed...
